TONE What is tone? Tone is the writer's/speaker’s attitude (emotion) toward his/her subject. Why does it matter? Tone helps to establish the mood, and mood is what makes us engaged in a book, text, song, movie, or TV show.

Tone Activity—Quick sentence
Read the following sentence aloud: “ I am a student at Banks Trail Middle School.” Now raise your hand if you would like to read the sentence again but now with emotion that accompanies one of the tones from the list of tone words.

MOOD Mood, or atmosphere, is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage. Writer’s use many devices to create mood, including images, dialogue, setting, and plot. Often, a writer creates a mood at the beginning of a work and then sustains the mood throughout. Sometimes, however, the mood of the work changes dramatically.

Important Terms: Tone in literat ure tells us how the author th ink s about his or her subject. The author's style conveys the tone in literature. Tone is the author's attitude toward story and readers. Mood is the effect of the writer's words on the reader . Mood is how the writer’s words make us feel.
