1
Cell Division What are the functions of cell division?
What happens during the cell cycle?
2
Cell Division three functions of cell division are growth, repair, and reproduction Asexual reproduction – when a single celled organism reproduces through cell division Sexual reproduction – cells from two parents combine and cell division occurs
3
What happens during the cell cycle?
A Cell grows(Interphase), prepares for division(Mitosis), and divides into two new cells(Cytokinesis), which are called daughter cells
4
Interphase During interphase the cell grows to full size
Replication – cell makes an exact copy of its DNA Chromosomes – threadlike structures made of DNA and proteins in the nucleus In Animal Cells, the centrioles are duplicated
5
Mitosis The cells nucleus divides into two new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed to each daughter cell Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
6
Chromosomes condense into shapes that can be seen under a microscope
Prophase Chromosomes condense into shapes that can be seen under a microscope Chromatids – two rod-like parts of a chromosome
7
Metaphase Each chromosome attaches to a spindle fiber at its centromere Chromosomes line up on the metaphase plate
8
Anaphase
9
Telophase
10
Cytokinesis In animal cells, cell membrane squeezes together In plant cells, a structure called a cell plate forms across the middle
