Provides student with: - program mission statement - program accreditation - curriculum development - practicum expectations - specification of outcomes - respect for student - grievance procedures

5 Selecting Appropriate Candidates for Program
Clear and unbiased criteria Initial screenings with possible interview Specifying policy/procedure of admission and retention Specifying policy/procedure for dealing with academic and personal/behavioral difficulties

6 Avoids Dual Relationships
It is not ethical for a counseling instructor to provide counseling to his or her current students.

7 Determination of Counselor Competence
No program can prepare all students to work with every client. At a minimum a need to teach students how to recognize own limitations and know when to refer. Assessing skills and abilities

8 Accommodating Students with Special Needs
Physical challenges Learning challenges Referral to special needs counselor

9 Student Responsibilities
Reading applicable materials: - syllabus - catalog - program manuals - educational materials Being active versus passive - the need to ask questions

10 Student Responsibilities
Showing respect for the educational process including the instructor and fellow students Integrity of performance - following instructions - avoiding plagiarism - avoiding cheating (usually a reflection of professional practice)

12 Supervisor-Supervisee Interaction
Involves at least 3 people (possibly 4) Supervisor responsibilities include: - timely and regular supervision - individualized teaching to meet super- visee’s needs and client’s needs Informed consent - Supervisor/Supervisee role - Assessment and expectations

13 Supervisor-Supervisee Interaction
Avoidance of dual relationships Respect for supervisee “legal maxim of respondent superior” (vicarious liability)
