Respect the right for all people to determine their own government--in colonial areas as well as independent countries. Colonies had just participated in the war, so they deserved sovereignty in return.

7 Territory Russia gets territory back that it gave up to Germany in Treaty of Brest Litovsk (Encourage Russia to establish democracy) Belgium gets all territory back French territory returned (from Germany) Italy’s borders determined by ethnicity Austria-Hungary remains free of German influence

8 Territory Balkan Peninsula—negotiate borders
Ottoman Empire gets broken up into Turkey + small countries based on ethnicity Poland gets independence Establish new balance of power Borders should recognize ethnicities/nationalities and rivalries between nationalities

10 Treaty of Versailles War Guilt Clause Armed forces limited in Germany
Reparations The United States did NOT sign the Treaty of Versailles—signed a separate treaty with Germany. The US did NOT join the League of Nations.

11 Other outcomes Ottoman Empire was broken up
League of Nations was created Mandate System

12 Mandates Former colonies/ territories of Germany and the Ottoman Empire were put under the control of the Allied Powers until they were ready to govern themselves Mandates allowed the Allied Powers to maintain control of colonial areas AND support their declarations that gaining territory was not their aim in WWI.
