1 Results of Adult Led Recess Activity
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation contracted Mathematica Policy Research and the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities at Stanford University, to conduct a randomized study of Playworks. What is Playworks? Trains and sends coaches to establish a weekly schedule of recess activities, providing inclusive and conscious cooperation to introducing sports and physical activity to children Develops leadership through a peer Junior Coach program, which encourages students to learn games, fair play and positive conflict resolution and to teach these skills and lessons to their classmates. Has worked on-site exclusively with low-income schools

29 schools in the 2010–11 and school years were randomly assigned to a treatment group and a control group. Data was collected from students, teachers and school staff in spring 2011 to document the impact of the Playworks program on six outcomes: school climate, conflict resolution and aggression learning and academic performance recess experience youth development student behavior.
