Reading of the poem Exploring the structure of Living Space:
What are your impressions of the characters lives in the poem? Explain why? Justify your point of view Exploring the structure of Living Space: How does the poem look on the page? Born in Pakistan and brought up in Scotland Is a poet, artist and documentary film-maker who divides her time between London and India This mixed heritage and itinerant (travelling) lifestyle is at the heart of her writing The fragility of homes in Mumbai, India becomes a wider metaphor for unstable personal and communal identities She wants to challenge what she sees in the world through poetry She wants to raise awareness of issues Slums are intimately described to show that this is not an acceptable way for people to have to live Danger is ever present in these slums Joy and courage is shown through the way people strive to better their life chances Poverty is prevalent
