1 Groups of Elements Chapter 34

2 The Periodic Table The periodic table is arranged in vertical rows called groups. The group number tells how many electrons the element has in its outer shell. The horizontal rows are called periods. The period tells us the number of shells an atom has.

3 Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions involves the behaviour of the outermost electrons. Therefore elements with the same number of electrons in their outer shell behave similarly.

4 Group 1 – The Alkali Metals

5 The Alkali Metals Physical Properties:
Alkali metals are soft and easy cut with a knife. Alkali metals have a shiny surface when freshly cut. Alkali metals have low densities. i.e. They float in water.

6 The Alkali Metals Chemical properties:
1 electron in their outer shell and are very reactive. Never found free in nature. There stored under oil.

7 The Alkali Metals Reaction with oxygen: Metal + Oxygen Metal Oxide

8 The Alkali Metals Reaction with water:
Metal + Water Metal hydroxide Hydrogen

9 The Alkali Metals Trends within the group:
As we move down the group the metals become more reactive. Outer electrons are further form the necleus.
