New Table of Contents Take out a new sheet of paper
Copy the Table of Contents onto this sheet Saving work: Save all papers for the following chapters 1 11 Put them in your reference section
2
The Human Brain Chapter 12
3
Parts of the brain The brain consists of 4 main parts: Cerebrum
Cerebellum Brain stem diencephalon
4
cerebrum Thalamus* pineal gland Hypothalamus* pituitary cerebellum
Epithalamus* cerebrum Thalamus* pineal gland Hypothalamus* pituitary gland cerebellum pons medulla oblongata spinal cord The hypothalamus, thalamus and epithalamus all form the diencephalon
5
Tuesday January 9th Take out a sheet of paper for notes
6
New page: page 17 Parts of the brain
Cerebrum Most of the brain mass Divided into two hemispheres Right and left hemisphere controls the opposite side Each hemisphere has 5 lobes Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, insula
7
Parts of the brain Cerebrum (cont) Responsible for
voluntary motor function Senses Integration of information
8
Cerebral Lobes Frontal Thinking Creativity Motor functions
9
Cerebral Lobes Parietal Memory Senses
10
Cerebral Lobes temporal Controls: Hearing Speech Memory
11
Cerebral Lobes Occipital Vision
12
Cerebral Lobes Insular Not sure of function
Believed to deal with feelings involving pleasure.
16
Open binder/notebook to page 16
Using the post-it/sticky notes for page 16, write questions and a summary for notes on page 17. If you have an 17A you can use the back of 16A for questions and/or summary. We will be adding a new page today Page 19
17
Parts of the brain: Diencephalon
Central core of the forebrain Consists of three paired structures – thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus
18
Diencephalon (epithalamus) Figure 12.12
19
Parts of the diencephalon
Thalamus Interprets cerebral senses Involved in memory processing
20
Parts of the diencephalon
Hypothalamus Integration center of involuntary nervous system (autonomic) Regulates many processes needed for homeostasis Regulates hormones (endocrine system) Controls emotions
21
Parts of the brain The brain stem Composed of: Midbrain Pons
Acts as a relay centers for other brain parts Controls some reflexes Causes fear responses Pons Connects cerebellum to rest of the brain Helps to maintain breathing Continued on next slide
22
Brain stem (Cont) Medulla oblongata Controls many autonomic reflexes
Controls respiratory and heart rates and blood pressure
26
Parts of the brain Cerebellum
Coordinates posture, balance and movement Some role in learning
27
take out the following:
Brain diagrams Chapter 12 questions I will be checking for completion
28
Functional Brain systems
The limbic system Structures located in the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus Called the emotional brain Integrates and responds to wide variety of stimuli that trigger emotions and feelings Also involved in long term memory processing
29
Protection of the CNS Meninges
Three connective tissues that surrounds the CNS Functions Cover and protect CNS Protect blood vessels Contains fluid- (cerebrospinal fluid) Partitions the skull
30
Types of meninges Dura mater Arachnoid mater Pia mater
Outer most, leathery Arachnoid mater Middle meninges, forms loose brain covering Pia mater Inner most, made of delicate tissue and is highly vascularized
31
Protection of the CNS Cerebrospinal fluid
Fluid found in and around the CNS Reduces brain weight Cushions CNS Protects CNS from trauma Helps nourish the brain
32
The epidural space Space between the spinal cord and vertebrae
filled with fat and veins Also filled with cerebrospinal fluid
33
White and Gray matter White matter Gray matter
Nerve fibers with myelin covers Forms white colored structure of the brain and spinal cord In brain they form fibers that allow for communication between brain parts Gray matter Cell bodies and nerve fibers without myelin
