Explain why the nominating process is a critical first step in the election process. Describe self-announcement, the caucus, and the convention as nominating methods. Describe the various ways in which voters can cast their ballots. Describe the various sources of funding for a campaign.

The Nomination Process
Nomination- The naming of those who will seek office. General Elections- Regularly scheduled elections at which a voters make the final selection of officeholders. Self-Announcement- The method of announcing a candidacy by simply announcing you are running. Caucus- a group of like-minded people go gather together to select a canidate in an upcoming election. The National Convention is a RARA session in which people pay big money to eat and meet the candidate for the party.

The Direct Primary Types of Direct Primaries Closed Primary
Only declared party members can vote. Open Primary Any qualified voter can take part. Blanket Primary Qualified voters can vote for any candidate, regardless of party Runoff Primary If a required majority is not met, the two people with the most votes run again Nonpartisan Primary Candidates are not identified by party labels

Ways to cast your ballot and where
Absentee Voting- voting prior to an election by mail in ballot. Ballot- the device in which a voter makes their choice in an election. Precinct- a voting district. Polling place- the place where the voters who live in a precinct actually vote.

Money and Elections Political action Committees (PAC)- The political extension of special-interest groups which have a major stake in an election. Subsidy- a grant of money, usually from the government.

Sources of Funding Private and Public Sources of Campaign Money
Nonparty groups such as PACs Small contributors Sources of Funding Temporary fund-raising organizations Wealthy supporters Candidates Government subsidies
