Warm-up October 2, 2017 1.) Evaluate this expression when a = 10
3a + 7 – 4a + 11 2.) Simplify the following expression. 8y – 3z + 2 – 10y + 5z + 2 3.) Solve for x x – 3 = 8 4.) Solve for d d – 4 = −16

October 6 Solving equations PPT
4
Distributive Property
A ( B + C ) Outside has to meet all the inside A(B) + A(C) Do not change any operation signs 5 ( B + 3 ) = 5B + 15 4 ( G – 2 ) = 4G - 8
5
Adding linear expressions
(5B + 3V) + (4B + 6V) If there is an addition sign between the ( ) then you can just eliminate the ( ). Do not change any operational signs or the sign of any number. 5B + 3V + 4B + 6V Then combine (simplify) 9B + 9V (remember the invisible 1?)
6
Subtracting linear expressions
(5H + 2A ) – (3H + A) If there is a subtraction sign between the ( ) then don’t change anything in the first ( ), BUT change everything inside the second ( ). 5H + 2A - 3H – A then combine like terms (simplify) 2H + 1A or 2H + A The subtraction sign goes away.
7
One-Step equations Identify the variable
Figure out what operation is being done to the variable (+, -, X, or ÷ ) Perform the opposite operation on BOTH sides of the equation (Properties of Equality) – remember the operation has a number with it T + 5 = operation is adding 5 T + 5 – 5 = 15 – 5 so T = 10
8
Two-step equations Label variable Label constant side of equation
Move the piece that is NOT labeled – do the opposite/inverse operation Re-write as a one-step equation Undo what’s being done to the variable – do the opposite/inverse operation Doneski!!
9
Words to expressions Addition N plus 7 Add 7 to a number (N)
7 more than a number (N) The sum of 7 and a number (N) All are N + 7
10
Subtraction K minus 7 7 less than K The difference between K and 7 Subtract 7 from a number (K) All are K - 7
11
Multiplication 2 times a number (P) The product of 2 and a number (P) Twice a number (P) Multiply 2 times a number (P) All are 2P
12
Division The quotient of B and 9 A number (B) divided by 9 One ninth a number (B) Divide a number (B) by 9 All are B/9
