Unit 2 – Order Of Operations
3
Vocabulary Numerical Expression – a string of numbers and operations that does NOT have an equal sign Order of Operations – a set of rules that mathematics have agreed on for simplifying multistep numerical expressions. This makes sure that everyone gets the same answer. PERMDAS– a pneumonic device to help remember the proper order of operations

PERMDAS Order of Operations P () Parenthesis E 43 Exponents R √ Roots
M × Multiplication D ÷ Division A + Addition S - Subtraction The proper order of operations is a four step approach to finding the answer to a math question with more than one operation sign. As soon a second sign is seen, you need to use the right order of operations. When all of the signs are the same, work the expression from left to right. This helps keep your work organized so that you will have more success in reaching the right answer. I recommend underlining or boxing out the part of the expression that you are working with. Then, write the answer underneath the line and bring down EVERYTHING else.
