1 Biochemistry Enzymes

2 Enzymes Are biological catalysts. Help cells function.
Are usually special types of proteins. Speed up chemical reactions like digestion.

3 Enzyme reactions Depend on the physical fit between the enzyme and its specific substrate. The enzyme has an active site that allows it to fit together with its substrate, like two pieces of a puzzle.

4 Enzymes and Chemical Reactions
Enzymes reduce activation energy, which is the energy needed to start the chemical reaction.

5 After the reaction- Enzymes release the new products.
The enzyme itself is unchanged so it can be used over again.

6 Enzymes May not work properly if there is a change in temperature or pH.

7 What is pH? A scale that ranges from It measures the concentration of hydrogen ions. Acids range from 0-6. Water is neutral (7). Bases or alkaline range from 8-14.

8 pH

9 Interpret the graphs.
