HELP!! What do I do ? My Child is Being Bullied!

2 What is bullying? You tell me…
Persistent, offensive, abusive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behavior Which amounts to an abuse of power or authority Which attempts to undermine an individual or group of people Which causes them pain (emotional or physical).

3 FACTS ABOUT BULLLYING BULLIES HAVE STRONG SELF-ESTEEM
BULLIES BEHAVIOR IS LEARNED AND LEARNED EARLY. BULLYING BEHAVIOR NEEDS TO BE REMEDIED BEFORE THE AGE OF EIGHT. BULLYING IS WHEN ONE CHILD OR A GROUP INTENTIONALLY HURTS ANOTHER CHILD OVER AND OVER AGAIN, FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME.

4 IF THE PARENTS SUSPECT THEIR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED, ASK THEM…
DOES YOUR CHILD... COME HOME FROM SCHOOL WITH CUTS AND BRUISES, DAMAGED SCHOOL MATERIAL, AND/OR CLOTHES DIRTY OR TORN? FREQUENTLY LOSE POSSESSIONS? APPEAR AFRAID OR DEPRESSED? OFTEN CRY BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP? FEEL ILL IN THE MORNING TO AVOID GOING TO SCHOOL? LOSE INTEREST IN SCHOOL WORK? BECOME QUIET, PASSIVE OR ANXIOUS?

5 If the child has not admitted he/she is being bullied..
Encourage the parent to ask… What’s it like walking to the bus stop or home from school? What’s it like on the bus ride to and from school? What happens on the playground during recess or before or after school? What happens in the hallways at school or during lunchtime? Have any bullies at school or in the neighborhood threatened anyone you know?

6 If the child has told the parent he/she is being bullied..
Find out if the bullying is.. Cyber bullying Emotional bullying Physical bullying Racist bullying Sexual bullying Verbal bullying Learn as much as you can about the bullying tactics being used, when and where the bullying is happening.

7 Things parents need to do if the child is being bullied…
Talk with and listen to your child. Talk with staff at your child’s school. Focus on your child. Sympathize with your child. Help your child to meet new friends. Never tell your child to ignore the bullying, but he/she could ignore the bully, walk away, join a group of kids, question the bully, etc. Don’t blame your child. Do not contact the parents of the student who bullied your child. Expect the bullying to stop!
