2 A) Westward Ho!

3 Americans Moving West By the early 1800’s, thousands of settlers crossed the Appalachian Mountains to the new lands to the west. They traveled in Conestoga wagons with their rifles and axes.

5 Louisiana Territory By 1800, the huge Spanish territory of Louisiana kept the Americans from moving too far West. The Americans relied on the Mississippi River for trade. In 1802, Spain banned the use of the Mississippi River by the Americans and secretly sold the territory to France whose leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, wanted a new American Empire.

7 Jefferson’s Fear Jefferson realized he had to own Louisiana for America to expand and sent Robert Livingston and James Monroe to buy the territory. Jefferson authorized $10 million to buy New Orleans and West Florida, who Jefferson believed was also owned by France.

9 French Santo Domingo In 1802, a rebellion in French controlled Santo Domingo (Haiti) ended Napolean’s ideas for a new empire. The rebellion was led by Haitian leader Toussaint-Louverture. Bonaparte decided if he could not control Santo Domingo, he would not be able to take America.

12 B) An Expanding Nation

13 Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon decided it was time to get rid of Louisiana. It had no value to him any longer and he needed money.

14 Charles de Talleyrand In 1803, Charles de Talleyrand offered to sell New Orleans and the entire Louisiana territory for $15 million. Livingston and Monroe accepted, but feared they had bankrupted the United States.

15 Louisiana Purchase (1803) Jefferson pushed the Louisiana Purchase through the Senate and doubled the size of the United States.

16 Meriwether Lewis/ William Clark
Before the purchase, Jefferson authorized Lewis and Clark to explore the new lands to the west. They formed the new Corps of Discovery.

17 Sacagawea In 1804, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis along the Missouri River and kept detailed notes along the way. They had a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea to help make the journey. She led them through the way.

18 Lewis & Clark In 1806, they returned from their 4,000 mile trip to the Pacific Ocean and back. They gathered valuable information on people, plants, and animals.

21 Northern Confederacy The Louisiana Purchase troubled Federalists in the NE who thought they would be weakened by westward expansion. So, Federalists in Massachusetts plotted to secede. New England would become the Northern Confederacy. Other states joined and they turned to Aaron Burr for support.

22 Hamilton & Burr Alexander Hamilton accused Aaron Burr of being part of this plot and labeled him a traitor. Burr challenged him to a duel and killed Hamilton!
