Matter All matter is made up of atoms.
Atoms are the basic building blocks of life and the universe. Atoms are the basis of chemistry.
3
Atoms Atoms are made up of even smaller parts. There are three kinds: Protons Neutrons Electrons
4
Atoms Protons and Neutrons are found in the center of the atom.
is called the Nucleus.
5
Atoms Electrons are found circling around the outer edges of the atom.
They circle around the nucleus in different layers called “Shells”.
6
Atomic Structure Atoms are too small to be seen, even by very powerful microscopes. However, through experiments, scientists have been able to discover that this is how an atom is organized.
7
These are all types of electric charges!
Have you ever been shocked by static electricity? Have you made your hair stand up by rubbing a balloon on it? Have you seen lightning? Have you charged a cell phone? These are all types of electric charges!
8
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons also have a small charge!
Charges Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons also have a small charge! Protons have a positive charge. (Remember: P for Positive!) Neutrons have no charge, or a neutral charge. Electrons have a negative charge.
9
Unique Atoms The amount of protons, neutrons, and electrons an atom has makes it unique and helps to identify it. For example, all atoms of Oxygen have 8 protons, 8 neutrons, and 8 electrons. If it has 8 of each, it HAS to be an Oxygen atom. If it has any more or less, it isn’t Oxygen. Count the particles in this picture! Protons:______ Neutrons:______ Electrons:______ Is this an Oxygen atom? ____________
