Heat Energy The energy that causes the particles of a substance to move faster. The more heat we put into a substance, the faster the particles will move. The faster the particles move, the higher the temperature will be.

Temperature The measure of the average amount of kinetic energy (energy of motion) of all the particles in a substance.

Added Heat Melting (Solid to liquid) Vaporization (Liquid to gas)
Do not confuse with evaporation! Evaporation is when vaporization only takes place at the liquid’s surface! Sublimation (Solid to gas) Skips the liquid state

Heat Removed Freezing (Liquid to solid) Condensation (Gas to liquid)
Deposition (Gas to solid) Skips the liquid state

What does this look like?
In a solid, the force of attraction between the molecules is stronger than the kinetic energy of the particles. The particles are moving, but their attraction is stronger so they stay locked in place. If we add heat to the solid, the particles vibrate faster and the KE overcomes the force of attraction and we see melting occur.
