Matter
2
What is Matter Matter is everything and is anything with mass and volume
3
volume = length x width x height
Mass and Volume Mass Mass is amount of matter contained in an object Mass is measured in grams and ounces Volume Volume is the amount of space of an objects takes up Formula of calculating a volume of an object is volume = length x width x height
4
Weight Weight is the force of gravity on an object’s mass
Weight changes with gravitational pull Weight is measured in Newtons and Pounds
5
Density Density is the measure of how light or heavy something is for its size Density determines an object’s ability to sink or float The object float when its density is less than the liquid’s density The object sinks when its density is more than the liquid’s density Mass Density = Volume
6
States of Matter Matter is anything that takes up space as a solid, liquid or gases States of matter depend on how fast the molecules move (molecules moves fastest in gas and slowest in solid)
7
Adding heat or taking it away can change matter from one state to another
When matter changes its state, it’s really the movement of molecules speeding up or slowing down
8
Boiling Point When liquid is heated enough to become gas
9
Melting Point When a solid is heated enough to became liquid
10
freezing Point When a liquid is turned into solid
11
Evaporation
13
States of Matter Little movement of Molecules move Molecules move fastest Molecules slower then gases
14
Condensation is the change of the physical state of matter
from gas phase into liquid phase, and is the reverse of vaporization.
