1 Have students discuss with a partner what they think the lesson will be about. Ask them to identify 3 word that they think are the most important clue words. Discuss as a class.

2 Circuit Review 5.6B - Demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and produce light, heat, and sound.

3 Vocabulary words Circuit Complete path Electric current Conductor
Insulator

4 Circuit source A circuit provides a path for the flow of electricity
The circuit requires a source of energy source

5 Complete path A complete path is when a circuit is set up to allow electricity to flow. There are no gaps or missing components in a complete path. Any switches are also closed.

6 Electric Current An electric current is the flow of electricity through a conductor An electric current can produce light, heat and sound

7 Conductors Conductors are materials that can carry electricity.
Metals such as copper, steel and aluminum are all good conductors.

8 Insulators Insulators are materials that can NOT carry electricity.
Wood, plastic, glass and rubber are good insulators.

9 The Flow of Electricity
Read “The Flow of Electricity” individually and answer the questions on the sheet. We will go over this in 10 minutes.

10 Are you ready??? Questions for assessment follow.

11 Students are gathering materials to make an electric circuit.

12 The diagram to the left shows: A a complete path B an incomplete path C an open circuit D a pathway that will produce sound

13 A student builds the circuit shown in the figure to the right
A student builds the circuit shown in the figure to the right. In this circuit, the bulb does not light up. Which change should the student make to light the bulb? A Replace the battery B Change where the wires touch the battery C Replace the light bulb D Change where the wires touch the light bulb

14 Which of the following materials could be used to complete the electric circuit and make the bulb light up? A Penny B Rubber band C Shoelace D Wooden toothpick

15 Check Yourself 1. A 2. A 3. B 4. A

16 Circuit Worksheet Complete the circuit worksheet with a partner. Discuss why or why not each circuit will work.
