4. Lipids (fats)
Lipids are made of a fatty acid and glycerol
Lipids store energy, act as insulation, and make up the cell membrane

5. Example of a Lipid- Phospholipid
Phospholipids make up the majority of cell membranes
Two parts: Hydrophilic head (love water) and hydrophobic tails (fear water)
Creates a lipid-bilayer that surrounds our cells and restricts what can enter and leave the cell
You get lipids from your diet- but excess lipids can be a bad thing

6. Nucleic Acids
Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides (phosphate, sugar, nitrogenous base)
Their function is to store and transmit genetic information
Two main examples: RNA and DNA

7. Example of a Nucleic Acid: mRNA
mRNA (messenger RNA) is made from a DNA template and carries the genetic code outside of the nucleus during protein synthesis
It is made during transcription, and will bind with the ribosome during translation
Every 3 letters of mRNA (a codon) codes for a specific amino acid
mRNA has 4 bases: Uracil, Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine

8. Proteins
Proteins are made of amino acids held together by peptide bonds
Proteins do everything in a cell- structure and function
Enzymes, hormones, channel proteins, insulin, keratin, antibodies
DNA mRNA  Proteins

9. Example of a Protein- Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen to your tissues
Your cells need oxygen to go through aerobic respiration to get ATP
A point mutation (substitution in one letter) in DNA can change the structure of hemoglobin and cause sickle cell anemia

10. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides
Their function is to be used in cellular respiration to provide energy for organisms
Examples: Glucose, lactose, amylose, cellulose
They can also be structural
Cellulose is a carbohydrates that makes up the cell wall in plants

11. Example of a Carbohydrate- Glucose
Glucose is a monosaccharide that is used during cellular respiration
The bonds of glucose are broken and that energy in the bonds is used to create ATP
Plants have to create their own glucose through photosynthesis
