2. Figure 1 Surface Tension Regulates Lipid Droplet Formation
While surface tension defines the energy associated with the phospholipid monolayer surrounding the lipid droplet (LD), bilayer tension defines the stretching energy of the lipid membrane in which LDs are embedded. Decreasing the surface tension and/or increasing the bilayer tension flattens the LD, inhibiting its budding (left), whereas increasing surface tension and decreasing bilayer tension favors LD rounding and budding (right).
