1 6th grade English Language Arts Curriculum Night

Monitor grades and missing assignments on ParentVue Midterm reports and Report Cards It is difficult for me to take calls during the day. I check my throughout the day. It is a good way to contact me and get quick feedback to questions or comments. I will respond to s within 24 hours. Agendas: Please feel free to send a note in your child’s agenda. I check these each morning, and I will write you a note back so you know I saw it.

3 Academic Goals During the year, students will...
● read and comprehend a wide range of texts to include poetry, short fiction, novels, plays, speeches, and various other informational texts; ● develop the ability to read and comprehend challenging texts; ● participate in Socratic seminars or other academic discussions about texts; ● write a variety of narrative and informational texts; ● learn a process for writing which includes analyzing a prompt, engaging in prewriting activities, drafting, participating in writing workshops, revising, editing, and publishing a final paper.

6 Language Workshop Major Standards
Write Arguments to support claims. Write informative texts with a well developed topic and precise language. Produce functional writing such as experiments, letters, book reviews, blogs. Conduct research projects, incorporating several sources. Summarizing and synthesizing info. Write narratives with a clear sequence of events and dialogue. Create poetry. Draw evidence from literary or informational text to support reflection and research. Language Workshop Major Standards Ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions plus presentation. 6 point rubric scores converted into percentage for the online grade book program.

7 Reading Workshop A sample of concepts your child will be learning:
Conducting short and in-depth research projects to answer a question. Participate in Socratic discussions and Book Clubs and use textual details to support points of view. Determine themes of a text. Applying comprehension strategies to understand fictional and non-fiction reading. Reading critically to determine authors’ point of view. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats.

8 Homework Expectations
Read everyday for at least 20 minutes. Required genres will vary. Complete reading log. 1 book/research project per quarter(Due dates will be announced.) Sometimes unfinished classwork becomes homework.

9 Report Cards Report cards are given out quarterly. The grading scale is A, B, C, D, F. Grades consist of class work, homework, tests, projects, and presentations. Tests directly reflect what we have been learning in class. Homework, Class work and/or notes can be kept to help review. Rubrics/scales specifying requirements for A, B, C…are used for projects and presentations. Classwork and homework may also be graded based on percent, but are not weighted as heavily as tests and projects. Refer to syllabus for details. Writing is graded based on the 6 Traits of Writing. Spelling is incorporated into writing and writing grade.
