Narrative Writing Today’s learning target:
I can use elements of a narrative to develop a fictional narrative. Narrative Writing Flocabulary Video:

“The Witch’s Hat”

Explanation A good narrative is like a good story; it creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. Good narratives also ask The Five W’s to creating a story: Who are the characters are in the story? What happens in the story? Where does the story takes place? When does the story takes place? Why do the events in the story happen? Guided Practice: During this part of the lesson, students and I will begin to fill out a chart based on their last day of summer before sixth grade.

Exposition What can you find within the exposition? The purpose of the exposition is to expose important background information within our story. We use the exposition to hook our reader by revealing: Characters Setting Prior Events

Rising Action/Conflict
What information should be included in the rising action? a series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interest and tension in a narrative. A rising action includes: all decisions characters' flaws background circumstances that together create turns and twists leading to a climax.

Climax What information should contribute to the climax? The climax is the point during a narrative when the action or conflict reaches its peak. At this point in the story, the story shifts toward a resolution of the conflict.

Falling Action What is the purpose of the falling action? The falling action ties up the loose end of the story and helps readers to gain closure on the conflict’s resolution.

Resolution What happens in the resolution? Either the character defeats the problem, learns to live with the problem, or the problem defeats the character.

Think…. Watermelons! The watermelon is the whole broad/big topic, the seed is the small moment story within. When writing a personal narrative, it is our job to highlight small moments that fit into an overall theme. In fictional narratives, small moments are emphasized by revealing emotions, events, dialogue, people, places and things.

Your Writing Prompt You are going on a journey unlike any other. You and your classmates from English Language Arts have been stranded in Jonas’s community. The plane you are riding in breaks apart and crashes. All survive and head off in different directions out of panic, and fear. You see others from your class and are found by members of the community. To chronicle your experience you will write letters to home about the time in the community.

Ticket out the Door Oh no! One of our classmates did not attend school today. Help them out by writing a brief summary about what they missed during instruction today. You will need to let them know about our fancy thinking maps and all of its contents. Good luck!
