2 Cause- The compass and the astrolabe were invented.
Effect- It was easier to navigate, therefore explore.

3 Cause- Europeans established plantation colonies.
Effect- Europeans made a lot of money selling cash crops such as sugar cane, rice, tobacco, and indigo.

4 Cause- Italians and Muslims charged Western Europeans high prices for Asian goods.
Effects- Western Europeans wanted to find new trade routes to Asia.

5 Cause- Europeans established large plantation colonies in the Americas.
Effect- Many Africans were enslaved and shipped to the Americas via the Middle Passage.

6 Cause- People wanted to find homes where they could worship freely or own land.
Effect- Settler colonies were established.

7 Cause- Only strong nations could afford exploration.
Effect- Spain, Portugal, England, the Netherlands, and France funded exploration.

8 Cause- The Columbian Exchange was established.
Effect- People in the Old World and the New World were introduced to new foods.

9 Cause- Usually, individuals did not have enough money to start colonies on their own.
Effect- People invested in joint-stock companies.

10 Cause- Europeans brought diseases, such as smallpox, to the Americas.
Effect- Most of the native population eventually died out.

11 Cause- Europeans wanted to spread Christianity.
Effect- Missionaries were sent throughout Asia and the Americas.

Effect- Raw materials were shipped from the Americas, finished goods were shipped from Europe, and slaves were shipped from Africa.

Effect- Europe’s middle class expanded.

Effect- Much of West African civilization was wiped out.

15 Cause- Europeans wanted deerskins and beaver furs.
Effect- Trading-post colonies were established.

16 Cause- Europeans used gunpowder in advanced weapons.
Effect- Europeans were able to impose their will on Native Americans and some Asians.

17 Cause- Some European nations were successful in practicing mercantilism.
Effect- These nations were able to build up their supply of gold and silver.

18 Cause- Entrepreneurs wanted to make money.
Effect- They invested money in business ventures, such as joint-stock companies.

19 Cause- Nations wanted a favorable balance of trade.
Effect- Nations attempted to export more than the value of their imports.

20 Cause- Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas during an attempted voyage to Asia.
Effect- Europeans began colonizing the Americas.
