MINDSTRETCHER 8/9/17 How many steps are there to the Scientific Method? Name as many as you can. Observe Question Hypothesis Experiment Results/Conclusion
2
Directions 8/9/17 Read the “Scientific Method Science Safety Rules” on your handout you just received Underline & number the broken safety rules (using pencil) How many did you find? Sit quietly & be ready to share!
3
The Scientific method
4
What is the scientific method?
The Scientific Method is a general pattern followed by scientists when conducting an experiment. Is there only one version of the scientific method? No…there are many variations of it, but all seek to identify a problem and provide an organized method for conducting and analyzing an experiment!
5
The steps of the Scientific Method
Observe Question Hypothesis Experiment Results/Conclusion
6
Observe You observe a topic that can generate questions for further research.
7
Question You ask a question about what is being observed. Identify the problem or question.
8
NO!! Hypothesis Do you ever change your hypothesis after realizing it didn’t turn out the way you thought it would? Based on your observations, you make an educated guess on what you think the outcome of the experiment, or the answer to your question will be.
9
Experiment You will develop and follow a procedure to test your hypothesis. The outcome must be measurable.
10
Results/Conclusion You will record the results of your experiment, and repeat the experiment if needed. You will state if your hypothesis was accepted or not and explain your results.
11
Control group & Experimental Group-
All factors are the same for the control and experimental groups EXCEPT for one. The ONE factor that differs is called the VARIABLE. Any differences observed are most likely caused by the VARIABLE.
12
What are the variables in an experiment?
Independent Variable- the variable that is intentionally changed in an experiment to observe its effect on the dependent variable. Dependent Variable- What is observed during the experiment; It changes as a result. Controlled Experiment- Changing one factor and observing its effect on another while keeping all other factors constant.
13
Scientific Method (on your organizer)
Fill in the missing terms as I read the paragraph aloud to the class… Listen carefully… do NOT interrupt!
14
Communicate the Results
“SCIENTIFIC METHOD”- On your organizer, put the following answers in the correct location within the concept map bubbles: Analyze the Data Modify the Experiment Form a Hypothesis Communicate the Results Perform an Experiment Identify the Problem Create an Experiment
15
6-Modify the Experiment 2-Form a Hypothesis
“SCIENTIFIC METHOD”- On your organizer, put the following answers in the correct location within the concept map bubbles: 1-Identify the Problem 5-Analyze the Data 6-Modify the Experiment 2-Form a Hypothesis 3-Create an Experiment 7-Communicate the Results 4-Perform an Experiment
16
Steps of the Scientific Method for kids
17
Hold up your answer using your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Review 1 Which step in the Scientific Method is given here? If I water and feed the plants, then they will grow to be tall and healthy. Hold up your answer using your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 1- Observe 2- Question 3- Hypothesis 4- Experiment 5- Results/Conclusion
18
CORRECT! An educated guess, hypothesis, is made to determine the effect water and food will have on the growth of plants.
19
Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Review 2 Which step in the Scientific Method is given here? My hypothesis is accepted. When I watered and fed the plants daily, they grew. Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 1- Observe 2- Question 3- Hypothesis 4- Experiment 5- Results/Conclusion
20
CORRECT! The results from the experiment were stated and a conclusion was made.
21
Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Review 3 Which step in the Scientific Method is given here? Today while walking home, I noticed that the plants in my front yard were starting to die. Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 1- Observe 2- Question 3- Hypothesis 4- Experiment 5- Results/Conclusion
22
CORRECT! A simple observation was made about flowers.
23
Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Review 4 Which step in the Scientific Method is given here? Why is it that some plants are growing, and other plants are dying? What affects the growth of plants? Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 1- Observe 2- Question 3- Hypothesis 4- Experiment 5- Results/Conclusion
24
CORRECT! Questions were formed about the flowers. These will be the questions carried out through the experiment.
25
Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Review 5 Which step in the Scientific Method is given here? To answer my questions, I watered and fed the plants daily and recorded my findings. Hold up your fingers… 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 1- Observe 2- Question 3- Hypothesis 4- Experiment 5- Results/Conclusion
26
CORRECT! An experiment was carried out to answer the questions to my problem.
27
