HOW TO WRITE THE RESEARCH PAPER
JUNIORS
2
Swbat organize their ideas and write a thesis statement and introduction
DO NOW: Take your thesis topic and brainstorm all of the various ideas you have based on what you have read about your topic.
3
TURNING BRAINSTORM INTO A THESIS SKETCH
You have ideas in front of you that relate to what you have read about your thesis topic or your own thoughts about your topic. Your thesis statement is a combination of your ideas and your research.

MODEL My topic is Hamlet and appearance vs. reality.
Do Now Brainstorm: In the play people often were not what they appeared to be ... Fakeness … intentional deception… hidden agendas… Sketch In life, we often see appearances not matching up with reality. In the play Hamlet, the title character is forced to uncover a lot of hidden agendas. Some characters such as Claudius and Polonius were intentionally fake, whereas other characters, like the Ghost, seemed like an apparition, but in fact was a real character that directed a lot of the action within the play. Relationships worked the same way—some were real like Horatio’s friendship, whereas Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were not really Hamlet’s friends. Through relationships, and character interactions, Hamlet’s downfall was not being able to sort through what existed versus what did not exist. (Could I prove that?)

TESTING IT OUT Through relationships, and character interactions, Hamlet’s downfall was not being able to sort through what existed versus what did not exist. How do I prove that A. B. C. D.

BRAINSTORMING SUBTOPICS
Take all of the sub points and see if you have enough to generate an entire paragraph. How does your research fir into the subtopic? What quotes can you use for your subtopic? If it does not work (thesis), with all of your research, refine your thesis sentence—making sure you have enough information, analysis, direct textual evidence to prove your point.
7
Meet Time Go and meet with like-minded topic holders
You guys can talk through your thesis statements and your research.
8
Work Time You need to sit down and collect your ideas and write your introduction. Everyone is going to read their introductions on Wednesday.
