Wedneday, June 1st

4 The “why” Research papers are a blend of the author’s assertions and opinions that are supported by outside research the author has conducted. Sources must be reliable All sources must be cited.

5 Source Requirements ATLEAST… (You can include more if you find it necessary) 2 online journal articles 2 online news articles

6 Reputable Sources Online articles from Google Scholar
Online articles from Galileo Articles from Academic Journals Content found on websites whose address ends in .edu

7 Non-Reputable Sources
Incomplete articles or articles without a clear author Generally articles from Facebook and Instagram are not reputable (unless from a legitimate news outlet)

8 Plagiarism Intentionally OR unintentionally representing someone else’s thoughts as your own This includes: Turning in someone else’s work as your own Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit Failing to put quotations in quotation marks Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation Changing a few words but copying most of the sentence from a source Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it forms the majority of your paper (whether or not the source is cited)

9 Avoiding Plagiarism We will use MLA format for the bibliography AND in-text parenthetical citations Parenthetical citations format (author name page number) Examples: Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263). Romantic poetry was characterized by “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings (Wordsworth 263).

10 Ways to include sources
Direct Quotes: pulled directly from the source as it is written and cited. These will take up less than 3 lines. Block quotes: Pulled directly from the source is it is written and cited. These will take up more than three lines and will need to be indented. Paraphrasing: When you summarize the words of an author, put them in your paper, and cite them. Most plagiarizing happens when trying to use this form of citation
