1 Remembered Places AQA Anthology: Paris

2 Learning Objectives Describe and apply key terms for language analysis in this unit.

3 Key terms for this unit:

4 Genre Literary Three main literary genres: Prose Poetry Drama
Any grouping of texts can be classified as a genre. Generic conventions are the expectations of that genre. See 3.2, pg of course book.

5 Register Register is language associated with a particular situation.
It can be formal or informal. What would you say to greet… a classmate at the weekend the King of Spain

6 Register depends on context
Consider: Who are the people communicating? What is their relationship? Where are they? How are they communicating(face to face, long distance etc.)? Why are they communicating? What is the purpose of their communication?

7 Representation Events, people and circumstances can be presented in a way that shapes how they are interpreted. This can be positive or negative.

8 Tasks for paired discussion
David Braziel’s poem “Hip Hop” complains about representation. Of whom? Where? Why? What can you say about the register in this poem?

9 Tellability Is a story worth telling? Does it have purpose?
Who is the audience? Will they be interested? Consider context and culture TASK: Activity 2, page 27 of course book. Read and discuss in pairs what makes these stories tellable.

10 Literariness TASK: Activity 1, page 64 of the course book.
