1. PHOBIA Fear, dislike, aversion Example: Someone who has a fear of feet is said to have “podophobia.”

2. MIS Hate (opposite of PHIL) Example: “The new leader has demonstrated that he is a misogynist.” (misogynist: a person who hates women)

3. DYS Bad, ill, difficult Example: “The characters in the book live in a dystopian society.” (Dystopian: an undesirable place)

4. MACRO Large, long Example: “The macroscopic particle was observed by the scientist. (meaning: large enough to be visible to the naked eye)

A/AN Not, without Example: atypical (meaning NOT typical) “The blond colored monkey has an atypical type of fur.”

MONO/MON One, single, alone Example: monolingual (able to speak only one language) “Eighty percent of Americans are monolinguals; eighty percent of Europeans are bilinguals.”

TOMY/TOM Cutting, operation of incision Example: tracheotomy (an operation that cuts into the trachea to create an air passage way). “Because of his heavy smoking, he had to get a tracheotomy.”

8. HETERO Different Example: heterogenous (grouping made up of differing or unlike parts) “The class was made up of a heterogenous group of students.”

9. HYPO Under, beneath, less than the ordinary Example: hypoglycemic ( a condition in which the blood sugar levels are lower than normal) “Since he is hypoglycemic, he needs to carry orange juice in his lunch box daily.”

10. ENDO Doing something Example: innuendo (an indirect implication) “The handsome waiter goes up to the table of women…he takes out his lighter and goes to light the candle…he says ‘Let me light your fire.’”

18. TORT Twist or wound Example: extortioner (a criminal who extorts money from someone by threatening to expose embarrassing information about them) “The extortioner was caught and arrested for trying to extort money from the politician.”

20. FER(OUS) Bearing, producing, yielding Example: vociferous (someone who expresses his views loudly/strongly because he wants his views to be heard) “The vociferous man in the audience was escorted out.”
