Task Information Investigate the factors that help to create a sustainable residential community 4.3 How might sustainable residential communities be planned? This is a lift from the specification

Which community or communities? A model or theory for sustainable
Setting up the Task What are the factors? Investigate the factors that help to create a sustainable residential community Which community or communities? A model or theory for sustainable This is a lift from the specification

What’s different? Sustainable Communities study focuses on sustainability aspects relating to equality, water, transport, energy, waste and materials Many field techniques are similar to Quality of Life studies, BUT a study that just focuses on equality would not be appropriate. Most people usually do the Quality of Life option, but this year this is the closest to it. We need to reassure teachers that they can do this option if they used to do the QoL option. So we need to be positive about it, saying that its similar to the QoL, but point out the main differences. Look at the teaching notes for QoL from 2014, also on the WJEC web-site. Sustainable communities are communities planned, built, or modified to promote sustainable living. This may include sustainability aspects relating to equality, water, transportation, energy, and waste and materials.[1] They tend to focus on environmental sustainability (including development and agriculture) and economic sustainability. Sustainable communities should focus on sustainable urban infrastructure, social equity, and sustainable municipal infrastructure. The intersection of all three areas of sustainability, economy, environment, and equality, are necessary to the creations of a sustainable community.

The enquiry process Involve the candidates in the enquiry process.
What are they aiming to achieve? – involve candidates in posing enquiry questions What is the wider geographical concept / theory that is being tested? How might candidates take some ownership for selecting or collecting data? How will they demonstrate independence? This is an important slide – it will re-enforce the message given by WJEC ie that it is involving kids in the whole enquiry process / testing of geographical ideas that is important – not just the collection of data.

Surveys Egan Wheel of sustainability Sustainable communities should
make effective use of natural resources enhance the environment promote social cohesion & inclusion strengthen economic prosperity Surveys: Indices or bi-polar scores to collect data about how key components (e.g. of the Egan Wheel) can be applied to a an area (or areas). Students could record evidence such as noise levels, traffic flow, travel options, quality of pavements/green spaces/ cycle routes, building design (as examples). They might combine such surveys with taking photos to illustrate the best and the worst examples of sustainable living;

Questionnaires Who knows an area best? Obviously it is the people who live, work and spend their lives there. Questionnaires: could collect data about different aspects of sustainable living from different stakeholder groups e.g. views on community cohesion and involvement, inclusiveness, building design, safety, perception of crime / traffic / travel options pollution etc.;
13
Questionnaires What do you like about Cymmer?
What do you dislike about Cymmer? Who needs to be involved?

Crime observation surveys
Anti crime features in the built environment Crime observation surveys: presence of burglar alarms, neighbourhood watch posters / stickers, anti-crime features. This could be combined with some secondary crime data into an index for each output area;
16
Crime observation surveys
Crime likelihood assessment Crime observation surveys: presence of burglar alarms, neighbourhood watch posters / stickers, anti-crime features. This could be combined with some secondary crime data into an index for each output area;
17
Primary Fieldwork – Services Surveys
For local areas, suburbs, rural communities Services survey: within each area under study e.g. libraries, post-offices, pubs, health clinics, low order shopping facilities etc.;
18
Service provision ...within each survey area
Services survey: within each area under study e.g. libraries, post-offices, pubs, health clinics, low order shopping facilities etc.;
19
GOAD/Base Map Analysis
Can use GOAD map/Base Map: Identify if settlement has become more/less sustainable Any patterns in service provision spatially/temporally Services survey: within each area under study e.g. libraries, post-offices, pubs, health clinics, low order shopping facilities etc.;

Building surveys Sustainable buildings
Buildings survey / Index of decay: create an index to record evidence of building design and sustainable futures (materials used / water use / power supplies EPC Certificates, Solar Panels, Wind Turbines, Double Glazing, etc
21
Building surveys Building design & sustainable futures:

22
Building Characteristics
Transport index: create an index which combines the frequency, length and cost of public transport to the CBD / main shopping centre / hospital

Stakeholder interviews
Community action groups Welsh Government Programme Communities First enables people to... • Say what they really want • Improve prosperity (Economic & Enterprise) • Consider a vision for the future • Develop health and learning in the community Extended interviews: for example with targeted groups and or organisations who might have set-up renewal projects, neighbourhood watch schemes etc. Perhaps a meeting with the local community police / police support officer;
25
Photographic evidence
Photographic evidence: Photos could be taken of the various areas within the region and annotated to take note of the building / environment / traffic / people / services / renewal schemes / upkeep etc. Or perhaps a photo that students think sums up the area – socially, economically and in terms of the environment.
26
Primary Fieldwork - Photos
Solar panels – save energy and generate income Useful apps: Skitch Camera Ace (Android) Fotobabble (iOS) Audio Photos (Android) Microsoft Autocollage (PC) Not on every property – evidence of inequality Photographic evidence: Photos could be taken of the various areas within the region and annotated to take note of the building / environment / traffic / people / services / renewal schemes / upkeep etc. Or perhaps a photo that students think sums up the area – socially, economically and in terms of the environment. Lack of off-street parking – problem for growing population Image: windandsun.co.uk
27
Using the evidence... How sustainable is the community you studied?
How do your results help us understand this community? How could a more Sustainable Community be planned?
