8th grade Physical Science: Chapter Notes Unit 1 (Introduction to Matter)
2
Chapter 1: The World of Physical Science
Section 1: Exploring Physical Science Science =Making observations (using your SENSES) and asking questions about those observations. Physical Science is the study of matter and energy (“physics” and “chemistry”)
3
There is a lot of overlap between the Sciences.
There are a lot of careers in the Sciences.
4
Section 2: Using the Scientific Method
The Scientific Method is used to answer questions and solve problems. You will be using your senses to make observations! These observations will lead to questions.
5
A “hypothesis” is a possible explanation or answer to a questions
A “hypothesis” is a possible explanation or answer to a questions. It should be testable. After you test your hypothesis: Analyze results and draw conclusions. Was your hypothesis correct? Explain your results to others. They may also wish to test your hypothesis.
6
A “Scientific Theory” is the result of many investigations
A “Scientific Theory” is the result of many investigations. It may be modified by new evidence! A “Scientific Law” is a summary of many experimental results. It has been well supported over time. (The Law of Gravity)
7
Models make difficult concepts easier to understand.
Section 3: Using Models Models are used to represent something that is either too small (an atom) or too large (the Solar System) to be easily seen at once. Models make difficult concepts easier to understand. Models can be used to test hypotheses and illustrate theories.
8
Section 4: Measurement and Safety
The “International System of Units” (SI—short for “system international”) is the standard measurement system used by scientists around the world. Quantities of measurement: length, volume, mass and temperature.
9
You must UNDERSTAND and FOLLOW all safety rules!
Derived quantities: You combine other measurements. For example: area and density. You must UNDERSTAND and FOLLOW all safety rules!
