Benchmark(s): SC.6.L.14.5 Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body (circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal) and describe ways these systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis. (Cognitive Complexity: High) Seth Arcenas Amanda Jiang Aditya Maddapu Mary Kim

2 Essential Question: How does the musculoskeletal systems help the body carry out life processes and maintain homeostasis?

3 Objectives: Students will identify and/or describe the general functions of the major systems (Musculoskeletal) of the human body. Students will identify and/or describe how the major systems of the human body interact to maintain homeostasis.

4 Vocabulary: Homeostasis Muscle Muscular System Skeletal System
Skeleton

5 Skeletal System: Made up of all bones in the body
Provides shape and protection of systems for the body Produces blood cells and stores calcium Regulates endocrine as well Main Function: To help the body maintain homeostasis, and provide support and protection of the other systems inside the body.

6 Muscular System: Helps body move by contracting and relaxing the muscles in the body Muscle tissue works to convert chemical energy into kinetic energy which make the body move The three types of muscle cells: Cardiac, skeletal, and smooth

7 Cooperation of Both Muscular and Skeletal Systems (Musculoskeletal)
The Skeletal system provides shape for the body The Muscular System provides movement How both systems work together: The muscles from the muscular system are attached to the bones in the skeletal system. They work together to help the body move with stability.

8 Higher Order Questions (HOQ):
1. Why do you need both muscles and bones to move your body? 2. How do the muscular and skeletal systems work together to achieve homeostasis? 3. How might a suit of armor be a good analogy for a function of the skeletal system?

9 HOQ #1 (ANSWER) The muscles are what do the moving, while the bones support you. It is the bones that make you able to make traction with the ground, while it is the muscles that pull the bones.

10 HOQ #2 (ANSWER) The Skeletal system maintains homeostasis by producing blood cells that replace dead or damaged ones. The system also helps maintain the amount of calcium is in the blood stream. The muscular system maintains homeostasis by

11 HOQ #3 (ANSWER) A suit of armor is like an extra layer of protection and support for the human body. This is a good analogy for the skeletal system because the armor’s function is related to the function of the skeletal system. They both support and protect the body to prevent harm and damage.
