The Basic Process Skills
Adapted by: Mrs. Dube
3
1. OBSERVING We observe objects or events through our five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. (Copy into notes) Example: Describing a pencil as yellow
4
The Process of observing can be:
Qualitative – identifying and naming the properties of an object such as its shape, color, size, texture, smell, and sound. Quantitative – This kind of observation involves measurement. Change – it could be the result of crushing, pounding, burning, cutting, decaying, etc. (Copy into notes)
5
2. COMPARING Comparing is using observable properties in discovering similarities of and differences between objects in order to identify relationships among objects. (Copy into notes)
6
3. CLASSIFYING Grouping information, objects or events together according to their properties. (Copy into notes) Example: Placing all rocks having certain grain size or hardness into one group.
7
4. INFERRING Inferring is explaining or interpreting an observation.
(Copy into notes) Example: Saying that the person who used a pencil made a lot of mistakes because the eraser was well worn.
8
5. PREDICTING (Copy into notes)
Predicting is the process of using past observations or data along with other kinds of scientific knowledge to forecast events or relationships. (Copy into notes)
9
6. Measuring Measuring is making and manipulating quantitative observations which involves using numbers, making or taking measurements, and using time and space. (Copy into notes) Example: Using a meter stick to measure the length of a table in centimeters.
10
7. COMMUNICATING Expressing ideas in many forms, such as orally, in writing or with graphs, diagrams, tables of data or photographs. (Copy into notes) Example: Describing the change in height of a plant over time in writing or through a graph.

“Yechhhh!” cried Dante as he spit out the first bite of his cereal, “This milk tastes sour!” Then the smell caught his attention, too. It was awful. In fact, he couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed the sour smell before. “The milk looked fine when I took it out of the refrigerator,” he remarked. Which process skills is being utilized? Inferring Predicting Observing Communicating

Which of the following is a quantitative observation? The mass of one leaf is 5 grams. The leaves are waxy and smooth. I would like 5 apples. It has a sweet odor.

Select the Correct Response
Which of the following is NOT an observation? The apple is light green in color. Apples are the best fruit. The apple tastes sour. The apple weighs about 38 grams.

Which of the following is an inference about a coin? The coin is the color of copper. Perhaps the coin sat in water and became corroded. c) The coin has a green substance on one side. d) This coin has the date 1994 marked on it.

You look out of your window and see two men carrying a TV set away from your neighbor's house. Which is an inference based on this observation? The owner bought a new set and is trading this one in. The television is smaller than yours. The TV set is black. d) You don't like their TV set anyway.
