2 Regulation 598/2014: state of play
The regulation is in force since June 2016. Main features of the text are being set in place List of competent authorities. Centralised Data base of aircraft noise Work is on-going to have a view on the number of 'operating restrictions' likely to be in place at this time as well as the way balanced approach is considered. The implementation by MS of the Environmental Directive should then give a place for the Regulation to be enforced, whenever a competent authority would decide (after all resources from the balanced approach have been used) to implement an operating restriction at an airport. 2

3 Supersonic….

4 Supersonic…. Work is on-going the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection Industrial demand is real to have aircraft being certified in the near future. The European position on this subject is clear: Supersonic airplanes must not be noisier than subsonic and so they must meet current and future noise standards for subsonic aeroplanes. Public acceptability issue is a key element. Considerable amount of data is needed to be able to draft a Standard. What are the next steps? A demonstrator could fly by end of 2018 Standards for landing and take-off noise are planned for end of 2022.

5 What about small drones?
Drones are aircraft: All ICAO standards apply and are in the EU legislation. Operating restrictions at airports. What about small drones? This is not covered by ICAO – but: possibility of European standards. Operating restrictions? Need to think about how drones operate in the airspace (noise + privacy issues)

6 Thank you
