B-Boy/B-Girl Developed by African Americans and Latinos in New York City in the 1970s Consists of 4 primary movements: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes/suicides Often called “break dancing” but “b-boying” or “breaking” are the original terms used to refer to this type of dance

Street Dance Refers to dance styles that evolve outside of a dance studio at: block/dance parties parks school yards raves nightclubs

Freestyle, Popping & Locking
Freestyle a random and personal dance developed by a single person Popping developed from street dancing in California in 60s/70s based on the technique of quickly contracting & relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body called a pop or a hit

Locking Style of dance based on locking movements
Freezing from a fast movement & “locking” in a certain position, holding that position for a short time and resuming the same speed as before Relies on fast and distinct arm and hand movements combined with more relaxed hips and legs
