AN AGRARIAN SOCIETY Jefferson believed the U.S. would be more successful if they were an agrarian society, one focused on agriculture.

During Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency, he was eager to reduce the role of government but at the same time increase the power of the U.S. He saw an opportunity when Napoleon offered him the Louisiana Territory at a great price. But, he wondered, is this constitutional? He knew the value of the lands that were out there because he had sent 2 men, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, out on an exploration of the new lands. It was a success.
