HERE ARE 2 QUOTES THAT PROVE IT:
AN AGRARIAN SOCIETY Jefferson believed the U.S. would be more successful if they were an agrarian society, one focused on agriculture. HERE ARE 2 QUOTES THAT PROVE IT: 1787: "I think our governments will remain virtuous for many centuries; as long as they are chiefly agricultural." (TJ to James Madison) 1795: "It [agriculture] is at the same time the most tranquil, healthy, and independent [occupation]." (TJ to J. N. Démeunier)

JEFFERSON’S STYLE Tried to protect and expand citizens rights.
Had a quiet, casual style. Determined to unite the country. Believed in a laissez-faire approach, “let alone”. Government plays a small role.

During Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency, he was eager to reduce the role of government but at the same time increase the power of the U.S. He saw an opportunity when Napoleon offered him the Louisiana Territory at a great price. But, he wondered, is this constitutional? He knew the value of the lands that were out there because he had sent 2 men, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, out on an exploration of the new lands. It was a success.

BUYING LOUISIANA Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans from Napoleon.
France offered the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Louisiana Purchase: Doubled size of the U.S.

LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION
Congress provided the $. TJ gave very specific directions. They kept journals and sent TJ gifts & updates. Traded and made peace with Native Americans. Sacajawea was a tremendous help. Made it to the Pacific by 1805 and back east by 1806.
