Opening Activity: March 26, 2018
Turn in your Elephant Lab Letter into basket. Be sure to staple all 3 items together: Rubric (extra copies available in green folders at resource table) Letter Purple data sheet I can… Share what I know about how animals regenerate and get bigger. Homework: Biotech TEST 3/27
2
Today’s Goals Take Development Unit pretest to share your current understanding how animals regenerate and grow over time. Complete “Initial Idea” tool to prepare your ideas and questions to share with the class.

Opening Activity: March 27, 2018
Please sit at your tables from last week – the CER groupings. Review your biotech notes, any last minute questions? I can… Explain your understanding of how biotechnology is used to help conserve a species Homework: Elephant CVR – due Friday 3/30
5
When you are done testing…
Return test to front table and put in folder. Pick up Elephant CVR – DUE 3/30 Create title page in your journal called “Development”. Allow two pages for opening activities. Pick up your Initial ideas from yesterday – tape in.

Organize the terms from smallest to largest: Organism, Biosphere, Atom, Tissue, Population, Molecule, Ecosystem, Community, Cell, Biosphere, Molecule. I can… Examine planaria to explore scales used in biology. Homework: Elephant and Cancer CVR – Due 3/30

Large, Macro, Micro, & Atomic-Molecular
Scales for Biology 2 Organize the terms from smallest to largest: Organism, Biosphere, Atom, Tissue, Population, Molecule, Ecosystem, Community, Cell, Biosphere, Molecule. Compare with your partner and class. Identify each section of your organization with the following scales. Large, Macro, Micro, & Atomic-Molecular 4. How do these scales work together to support growth in organisms.

Lab #15 Plenty of Planaria
Today’s Goals: Observe the planaria. Write 4-6 observations in your journal. Sketch a picture of the planaria in your journal Label at least 6 different parts of the planaria. CLEAN UP – bring your planaria back up to front and put microscope away. Initial Ideas and Questions: What questions do you have about planaria? Specifically about planaria growth? How do you think planaria growth will occur at the organism, cellular, and molecular levels?

Ethical Treatment of Animals
3 Rs of humane experimental techniques: Replacement: Where possible, substitute non-living materials (i.e. prepared tissue slides) Reduction: Limit the number of animals used, but do not increase the suffering of individual animals Refinement: Minimize the impact of any procedure or condition on the wellbeing of the animal

What are Planaria? Freshwater flatworms (phylum: Platyhelminthes)
Live in freshwater under leaves and stones Avoid light (“negative phototaxis”) Free living – not parasites Carnivores – eat decaying meat, insects and larvae (egg yolks or liver in the lab) 1-20 mm in size Long lived Use sexual or asexual reproduction This picture has been released it into the public domain.

What questions do you have about planaria? Planaria growth?
Opening Activity: March 29, 2018 I will stamp your “planaria playdate” work from yesterday. See whiteboard for what needs to be present for a stamp. What questions do you have about planaria? Planaria growth? I can… Predict what will happen when we alter planaria, how will they grow and heal? Homework: Elephant and Cancer CVR – Due 3/30

Lab #15 Plenty of Planaria
Each team will observe 3 planaria: Experimental Planaria #A Every team will cut this into half, separating the anterior from the posterior halves. Experimental Planaria #B This will be cut in a manner determined by your team. Control Planaria (for class) This will not be cut. Used with permission from UC Museum of Paleontology
19
Lab #15 Plenty of Planaria
Today’s Goals: Decide how your team will cut your experimental planaria (Planaria B) Write hypotheses for each planaria: control, cut in half (A), and your experimental planaria (B) Set up your lab notebook to collect data Label containers for your planaria Bring to the file cabinets to store

Care and Feeding of Planaria
The water is very important! Fresh water from a pond, stream or lake is best; spring water is adequate Keep cultures in a cool, dark place Feed planaria at least once a week Change the water twice a week, especially after feeding After cutting them, the cultures should not be fed
