2. Today we are going to look at how sentences are used to separate ideas/items in a sentence
1. Using commas in lists
Commas are needed to separate each item in a list so that they are clear for the reader.
Example: I had packed two pairs of trousers, four t-shirts, three jumpers and two pairs of shoes.
2. Using commas to separate different clauses
If a sentence has a main clause and subordinate clause, they need separating with a comma.
Example: Given the appalling weather conditions, Stephen was lucky to survive the storm.
Main Clause – makes sense on its own.
Subordinate Clause – doesn’t make sense on its own.

3. Add in the missing commas
The pyramids one of the wonders of the ancient world lie just outside Cairo.
The recipe needed jam flour sugar fruit eggs ketchup and baking powder.
As the sun began to sink over the sea Karen got ready to go out.
Once the storm was over we were able to set sail for the lost island.
We used to live in an old dilapidated ramshackle house.
Jill a talented woman in the world of business decided to run for president.
