Cells Alive – Cell Cycle

Gap 1 Phase (G1) – Cell Growth, produce RNA, synthesize protein

Gap 0 Phase (G0) – cell stops dividing (temporary or permanent)

G1 Checkpoint – “Is cell big enough and the environment stable?”

Continue G1 Phase – If cell passes G1 checkpoint, the cell continues cycle

Synthesis Phase (S phase) – Period of DNA replication, going from 2N to 4N in preparation for mitosis

Gap 2 Phase (G2 phase) – After DNA replication, the cell continues to grow and produce proteins

Gap 2 (G2) Checkpoint – “Has DNA replicated, cell big enough and environment stable?”

Begins mitosis – cell growth and protein production stops; cell begins division process

Metaphase Checkpoint – “Is cell ready to complete division?”

Continue Mitosis – Cell finishes dividing and two new daughter cells enter interphase; old cell no longer exists
