1 SQ4R Tools

2 SQ4R is a comprehension tool
Reading is more than just pronouncing words. To read means to “construct meaning”. SQ4R is a reading technique that can be used to increase comprehension for both fiction and non-fiction text.

3 What does it mean? Scan Question Read actively Relate
Retell (in your own words) Reread These are done before reading the text. These are done while reading.

4 Scan Preview the text by looking at and check off if you recognize any of these things. titles headings or section headings pictures Keywords captions to pictures graphs

5 Question Predict what a section might be about,
Explore the purpose of the reading, Turn title/heading into a question, Use 5 Ws and H: Who What Where When Why How

6 Read actively and Relate
Ask Questions Why did the author mention this? Predict I think the Germans will invade. Visualize What’s important? This is the main idea… Context Clues Word /context/ word Personal Connection This reminds me of …

7 Retell Put it in your own words. Be able to tell it or write it.
This story reminds me of a time…

8 Reread If you still aren’t quite sure go back and reread to make sure it was all understood. Rereading happens also for enjoyment and when something has many levels of meaning.

9 What to do on your assignment…

10 1. Find an article. Find an article in Britannica Online that you are interested in. It should be at least a paragraph and have a picture. Open a Word Document and label it the name of your article. Copy and paste up to 3 paragraphs of your article into a word document.

11 2. Scan the article Insert comments on 1. Title 2. Picture

12 3. Question the article create 3 questions and insert
comments after the title and before the article.

13 4. Read Actively and Relate
Read and highlight sentences and insert comments. do 5 active reading techniques Ask Questions Predict Visualize What’s important? Context Clues Personal Connection

14 5. Comments 10 total comments minimum… That will probably be
2 comments – scan 3 comments – question 5 comments – active reading and relating Open another word document and label it SQ4R Copy and paste comments to another word document

15 6. Retell the article On the same sheet with your comments in at least 5 sentences retell what you read.

16 7. Finish Save your SQ4R to your computer folder
Check with your teacher to see if it is correct. Print a copy to place in your folder
