1 Relationship Between Ethics and Technology
Presented by; Shane Wallingford IET 600 Impact of Technology

2 Ethics Defined 1. a system of moral principles: the ethics of a culture 2. the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.

3 Technology Defined the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.

4 Dilemmas with Ethics and Technology
Medicine Warfare Energy Genetics

5 Medicine Abortion Organ transplants Prosthetics Sex changes
Experimental surgeries

6 Warfare Nuclear weapons Nerve agents Mustard gas Dirty bombs
Agent orange

7 Energy Affordable Level of cleanliness Waste disposal Waste handling

8 Genetics Stem cell research Cloning Genetically altered plants
Genetically altered animals

9 Conclusions Medical issues are constantly scrutinized for ethical issues. When is a fetus an actual person? Are organ transplants ok to have? What weapons are acceptable to use in warfare? Are there such things as innocent people in a total war?

10 Conclusions What type of energy is acceptable? How clean does it have to be? How do we get rid of waste produced from making energy? Is it ok to use stem cells to save lives? Is it ok to clone animals and genetically alter them to be healthier.

11 Conclusions All of these are the questions that scientist, government agencies, universities, engineers, and corporations have to answer. The more progressed we get with technology, the more the questions are getting harder to answer.
