Shabbat is the Jewish day of
Rest. It begins at sunset on Friday and lasts until sunset on Saturday. It reminds Jews that God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh.

On Fridays, Jews prepare for Shabbat by shopping, cleaning and cooking.
At sunset, the mother lights two candles and says a prayer to show Shabbat has begun. Many male Jews attend the synagogue before joining the family for the Shabbat meal.

The father recites the Kiddush blessing over
a goblet of red wine. Another blessing is said over two loaves of Challah bread. This reminds Jews that God provided manna bread while they were fleeing from Egypt.

Shabbat ends at sunset on Saturday and it is declared officially over when three stars appear in the sky. The celebrations end with the Havdalah ceremony. The father lights a special plaited candle to symbolise the ending of Shabbat.
