The ant, spider, frog, or lizzard gets caught in sticky tree sap
It’s covered by more sap
The sap hardens with the body inside
An animal falls into a thick, sticky pool of asphalt (tar)
It is trapped, and its remains are preserved.
Use fossil 1 and 2 as a template for the other 3: title, drawing, then how it forms. Once the tone is set, students finish the same way
Drawings don’t have to be perfect.
Granted these aren’t great pictures; on the ppt I use with my students I actually insert much better looking Google image drawings for them to follow, but I can’t legally do that here. At the bottom of this is a link to a page with some examples of line drawings of petrified fossils. If you do that, choose something that looks nice and representative, but not too challenging for your students to draw (are the lines/contours easy to notice?)
