Water Pollution By: Alyssa, Jack, Davis, Graylin
3
The Situation Many of the people stationed in the marine base Camp Lejeune have potentially been exposed to drinking water contaminated with industrial solvents, benzene, and other chemicals. These chemicals have harmful health effects and have prompted the government to provide disability compensation. The potential diseases and afflictions are as follows:
4
Disability Compensation
Adult leukemia Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes Bladder cancer Kidney cancer Liver cancer Multiple myeloma Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Parkinson's disease
5
Type of Pollution The situation at Camp Lejeune is a water pollution situation.
6
Effects on the ecosystem
The contamination of the water not only harmed the people that ended up consuming the water, but the living creatures inside the source. The water is contaminated with concentrations 240 to 3400 times more than what is permitted by safety standards. The pollution contaminated the wells at the bases, and the groundwater was contaminated with PCE.
7
Remediation There was an attempt to fix this water pollution problem. Some drinking water wells were closed after thy did further testing on the water confirmed contamination from leaking fuel tanks and an off-base dry cleaner.
8
Legislation that protects against this?
There was a law passed about pollution that created certain environmental laws, but the Pentagon failed to earn the exemptions from environmental laws. Just as important, its overreach brought national attention the the then little-known problem of military pollution, with Camp Lejeune coming to serve as an example of what happened when the Department of Defense was left to police itself.
