3 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
Description Advanced Placement (AP) is a long-standing acceleration process to associate degree completion, certificate obtainment, and meeting transfer requirements to 4-year institutions for students. As specialists in learning and assessment, faculty have pioneered the AP efforts in higher education. This presentation will provide information on faculty roles in shaping the AP process as subject matter experts. The discussion will include how to ensure faculty established standards are aligned with college level performance to validate AP curriculum, and how AP exam questions are created through a collaborative peer process. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

4 Why Are You Here? What do you want to know?
What kinds of issues are you seeing?

5 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
AP Examination Stats Number of AP Examinations taken are increasing: 2006 2,266,038 AP examinations in the United States with California accounting for 405,711 2016 4,559,273 AP examinations in the United States with California accounting for 743,280 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

6 Assembly Bill 1985 (2016, Williams)
The law requires the Chancellor of the California Community Colleges, in collaboration with the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges, to develop and require each community college district to begin adoption and implementation of a uniform policy, regarding Advanced Placement (AP) Credit. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

7 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
Assembly Bill 1985 Any student who passes a College Board AP examination with a minimum score of three in a subject matter similar to that of the AP Examination, the student will be awarded credit in a general education area. Each community college is required to post the most recent AP credit policy on its website. With the recent passage of AB 1985 and the development of the CCC GE AP list colleges must now award general education area credit for minimum AP Exam scores of 3. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

8 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
CCC GE AP Credit Policy If the college does not have a course similar in content to the AP Examination then the college shall award credit for the indicated GE Area as shown on the California Community College GE AP List. If there is no GE Area that fits the AP Examination, the college may award elective credit. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

10 ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
CCC GE AP Credit Policy CCC GE AP List is the minimum required. Colleges can assign more units than minimum. Where CCC GE AP List has “N/A” colleges can assign GE Area credit. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

11 GE Area Credit vs. Course Specific Credit
GE Area Credit vs. Course Specific Credit General Education Area - indicates a broad area of study that is required to be offered at all community colleges (Title 5 Section 55063) Course - specific area of study defined locally by discipline faculty in the Courses Outline of Record (COR) ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

12 Discipline Faculty Responsibility
Determining how a student’s score on an AP Exam translates into specific course credit in the major remains the responsibility of local discipline faculty. The number of units to award and the score a student must earn to receive local course credit are but a few areas that local discipline faculty must take the lead on. AB 1985 refers to General Education Area credit, not to specific courses. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

13 Discipline Faculty Responsibility
Discipline faculty have the responsibility to determine when a course or courses “subject matter” is “similar” to that of the AP Examination For example: US HIST AP Exam with a 3 score = US HIST (one course) US HIST AP Exam with a 4 or 5 score = US HIST Series (2 courses) At the heart of these processes should be support by the local academic senate or the local curriculum committee working on behalf of the senate. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

14 Discipline Faculty Responsibility
It’s important to have in place a cyclical, scheduled process for reviewing how AP Exam scores are applied at the department or discipline level. AB 1985 requires college districts to have a policy on advanced credit, and faculty should work with administrative partners to establish procedures for ensuring faculty determinations for course credit. At the heart of these processes should be support by the local academic senate or the local curriculum committee working on behalf of the senate. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

16 Resources - Articulation Officer (AO)
The AO has expertise in areas that can assist faculty when determining alignment of AP Examination scores to their courses. For example, what are the implications for awarding course credit for an AP score of 3 verses a score of 4. CSU and UC AP course credit CSU and UC articulation agreements The AO can help faculty understand the implications of awarding local course credit for an AP Exam score of 3, and other more intricate and complicated questions around articulation agreements, which often vary between a college’s local CSU and UC. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

17 Resources - College Board
AP high school course information; curriculum framework, course description, and course content AP examination information; development, question examples, and scoring information These materials provide an invaluable resource to assist community college faculty to determine the comparability and alignment of AP courses and AP Examinations to community college courses. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018

18 Resources - CSU AP Course Policies
UC Systemwide AP Policy - specific unit value: there is none. CSU Graduation AP Policies - each CSU campuses identifies specific local course and/or GE Area credit for AP. Transfer CSU GE/B AP list - CSU: ASA Example: if your CSU and UC feeder institutions award course credit for an AP Exam score of 3 in Psychology and that same course is the one that articulates to your college’s “Introduction to Psychology”, it would be appropriate to award the same credit for a minimum score of 3. ASCCC Plenary Session, April 12-14, 2018
