Allies warn Japan to surrender or face “complete and utter devastation”

4 Decision to bomb Japan Truman made the difficult decision to use the just-tested bomb. He argued it would end the war, and in the long run save more lives than continuing the war.

5 Hiroshima and Nagasaki

6 Hiroshima: Aug. 6, 1945 U.S. pilot Paul Tibbets, flying the Enola Gay, drops an atomic bomb (“Little Boy”) over Hiroshima.

7 Hiroshima 70,000 civilians died instantly.
Thousands more later from burns, radiation, and other disease.

9 Nagasaki Two days later, August 8, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Japan had yet to surrender (but was considering it); Truman decides to drop a second bomb (nickname: “Fat Man”) on Nagasaki on August 9. 40,000 people killed instantly, and thousands more later from radiation and burns.
