What is happening? Cone = sound catcher -outer ear catches sound Cardboard roll = ear tube -connects the outside to the eardrum Balloon = eardrum -picks up sound as a vibration

The middle ear includes eardrum and three small bones that are attached to it:
Malleus - bone closest to the eardrum, looks like a hammer Incus - looks like an anvil and is named the incus. Stapes - stirrup shaped bone, links the incus to the membrane that connects the middle ear to the inner ear. These bones pass sound through the middle ear by vibrations. The malleus picks up the vibrations from the eardrum membrane and causes the incus and then the stapes to vibrate. These vibrations are then passed through the membrane and into the inner ear.

The inner ear is made up of the semi circular canals that help us keep our balance and the cochlea that turns the sounds we hear into electrical impulses that our brain can understand. Vibrations come from the middle ear through the connecting membrane. There are tiny hairs near the membrane that are attached to nerve cells. The vibrations cause these hairs to bend and sway. The nerve cells then carry a message about the sound to the brain.
