4
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
What is it? How is it stored? How is dispensed? How do you calibrate DEF dispensers?
5
What is DEF? DEF is not a fuel or fuel additive
Operating fluid for Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology 67.5% de-ionized water / 32.5% automatize grade urea Converts NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor
6
What is DEF? Highly susceptible to contamination
Any surface that comes in contact with DEF must be clean and dry Any exposure to hydrocarbon fuels will contaminate the product Only stainless steel or additive free plastics are allowed when handling DEF
7
What is DEF? Not flammable
Non-hazardous substance but cannot be dumped down a storm drain Must be returned to the storage tank Or returned to the supplier
8
What is DEF? Diesel Exhaust Fluid freezes at an ambient temperature of 12˚F DEF can be used after it thaws out after being frozen Keep Diesel Exhaust Fluid out of direct sunlight
9
What is DEF? Store below an ambient temperature of 86°F as Diesel Exhaust Fluid can start to decompose Wear some protection if you are handling large quantities, with danger of spilling If spilt on the ground, inside the vehicle, or on paintwork wash down with plenty of water
10
DEF Storage Aboveground tank –most common 2k gallons or less Heated
Double wall with insulation UST –common at large truck stops 10k gallons or less Fiberglass Double wall construction
11
DEF Storage 1,000 gallon tank Remote Fill Box Triple Wall
R-16 Insulated - Integrated heater Redundant heater Overfill Prevention Integrated Submersible
12
DEF Storage 8,000 gallon tank Specifically designed for DEF
Double wall wet or dry annular space
13
DEF Storage Stainless steel manway for DEF tank with fittings for STP, Probe, Vents, and product return line
14
DEF Fill Adapter
15
DEF STP FE Petro STP Submerged into the DEF product in either AST or UST application Unique design allow for recirculation of DEF to prevent freezing
16
DEF STP
17
DEF STP Red Jacket DEF STP
18
DEF STP Unique design leaves the motor outside the product for easy service Easy lockdown check valve for testing and servicing the product line
19
DEF Calibration
20
DEF Calibration An ELAFIX 40 Magnetic Adapter must be used when dispensing DEF for calibration purposes DEF must be properly managed and cannot be discarded in storm drain or where it can possibly reach surface water or groundwater Ensure that DEF does not come in contact with soil, waterways, drains, and sewers DEF poured back in the tank must be kept clean
