3 What is a Concussion? Concussions are caused by a bump or blow to the head Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury You can’t see a concussion A CONCUSSION IS A BRAIN INJURY

4 What a concussion does to you…

5 You May feel… Headache or “pressure” in head Nausea or vomiting
Balance problems or dizziness Double or blurry vision Sensitivity to light Sensitivity to noise Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy Concentration or memory problems Confusion “Something doesn’t feel right”

6 Your Role in Preventing Concussions

7 Regardless of The Sport, Take These Steps to stay safe…
Ensure Protective equipment Fits properly Is well maintained Is worn consistently and correctly Wear the right protective equipment for the particular sport Helmets Padding Shin guards Eye and mouth guards Practice good sportsmanship at all times Follow the rules of the sport Follow coach’s rules for safety

8 IF You Suspect someone has suffered a concussion…

9 Seek medical attention right away
A health care professional will be able to decide how serious the concussion is and when it is safe for your child to return to sport

10 Follow suggestions to Keep The athlete out of play
Concussions take time to heal Don’t let the athlete return to play until a written release is received by family physician. Athletes who return to play too soon- -While the brain is still healing- Risk a greater chance of having a second concussion

11 Second concussions Second or later concussions can be very serious
They can cause permanent brain damage Affecting the athlete for life Could potentially result in death

12 Be responsible for your own and others health and future
Failure to communicate possible concussions could result in DEATH Athletes or parents tell your coach or athletic trainer about any recent concussion that occurred on or off the field- Coaches and athletic trainer should know if the athlete had a recent or previous concussion in ANY sport and in any setting Communication is essential between athlete/ coach /athletic trainer in managing concussions
