Definitive guide to getting your students through B1/PET
Speaking part 2 Baztefl.com
2
Teacher’s Notes Slide 3- This is a warmer before doing any speaking part 2 from a text book. The idea is to get studenst to focus on the main objective of the task. Answers are 1-b, 2-a, 3-a, 4-b. Slide 4- Get your students to get their notebooks out and explain that the next part of the class is vital. Before showing the options you could ask what expressions they know for agreeing, disagreeing and suggesting. Try to make a point of saying that I am Agree is not aceptable, unless that is actually their name. Slide 5- I normally do this one a week or so later using another example question in a text book. This is to help students interact more and focus on making a decision. Slide 6 –Leave students a week or so before trying part 2 again. Remind them of the previous expressions. Then show them how using conditionals can help them get a better mark in grammar. Slide 7 – This shows how it’s always possible to use the 1st or 2nd conditional in this part. Then you can either do this question or use another one in a text book or past exam paper.

Suggest Agree Disagree Why don’t they… Yes, I completely agree. I see your point. I think so too. You’re right. I don’t think so. How about… I’m not so sure. I think they should… I’m sorry, but…

Turn-taking Summing up So, what shall we decide? Well, I think we’ve decided to… Do you want to start? What do you reckon? To sum up, let’s choose… What do you think? Do you know what I mean?

How to improve your marks for part 2
Apart from interacting well, how else could you get a higher mark from this part? Trying to use complex grammar. Which complex grammar could you always use in the part? 1st or 2nd conditional
7
Focus on Conditionals How could you use a conditional for this question? If we chose the camera, we could take some cool photos of the venue so people could see how amazing it is. Now write 2 more examples.
