Teaching AS/A2 PE

2 What time do we finish! 2 things that will happen today
Lunch will be at 12.30pm We will finish at 2.30pm

3 When I first began teaching ‘A-Level’ PE…
Overuse of the core text book Dictating notes Revision occurred only after the content had been covered Students knowledge and understanding was assessed largely through ‘hands up’ and ‘tests’ Students stayed in their seats Used dated examples Spoon fed the students Students relied on ‘unreliable’ internet research

4 Today We will focus on the lesson itself and how your teaching can avoid my early experiences! Introduce a framework/model for teaching theoretical PE Apply and try the model!

5 The Sport IQ Model Relate Review Revise Movement State changes

6 Subject knowledge Select an area of the specification. You will be applying what we do today to your area throughout today and plan the ‘perfect’ theoretical lesson. One group will teach their lesson at the end of the day!

7 1. Health, exercise and fitness
– definitions of health and fitness and the relationship between them – consideration of the problems associated with trying to define health and fitness – components of health-related fitness – stamina, muscular endurance, strength, speed, power, flexibility – components of skill-related fitness – reaction time, agility, co-ordination and balance – effect of lifestyle choices on health and fitness.

14 Review examples AS/A2 as a student? AS/A2 as a trainee?
Problems, surprises and concerns? What do you already know? (10 questions)

15 Some ‘review’ examples

16 Relate Can the students see the relevance of the content with regards to; Modern day sport? Their own sporting experiences? The practical components of their course? Let’s try this with the topic of media, sponsorship and sport
